This is the freebie for the May 2012 Crowdfunding Creative Jam, which you can visit on LiveJournal or on Dreamwidth. It was inspired by a prompt from
stryck.Synaesthesia Feast
It is not the flavor of the food that he tastes,
but the color -- the pink lemonade
tastes the way roses should smell,
the summer squash is like butter,
green beans have a piney tang,
and the cherry pie burns like chili peppers.
The flavors themselves provide the background music --
a symphony of trumpeting spices
over a steady beat of savory,
mellow vegetable woodwinds
and piercingly sweet strings.
It is not the same feast that everyone else is enjoying,
but it is just as good.

I am mostly recovered from my recent bout of illness. I'm still coughing a bit, but at least I no longer feel like my throat is going to crawl out of my body.
Because I've been terrible at shopping for plane tickets, the three of us are *not* travelling in early June like we'd hoped. If I don't defeat some airline bureaucracy, we won't be flying at the end of September, either. If neither of those work, we'll be heading east some random time this summer, probably in July. *grumblegrumblegrumble*
I'm doing fanmixes for
casestory this year. I've gotten the first one done enough to send the songs and graphics off to the author and see what they think. Now I need to start collecting screencaps and music ideas for the second one.
I have 26 of 30 chapters of editing done on my novel (only 4 more to do by the end of the month). Yippee!

Iris, Goddess of the Rainbow
I often feel quite guilty (like today), writing about terrible things like murder and slavery and virulent pre-Civil-War racism and having such a ripping good time, chortling to myself as Ben January and E.A. Poe trade wisecracks - solemn horribleness of subject matter deserves a more sober attitude. If I were spiritually more developed I'd have one.
Incidentally (on the subject of not being spiritually developed AT ALL), I have an essay about the 9th Doctor Who - the season in which the show was re-booted - in the upcoming collection, Chicks Unravel Time, edited by Deborah Stanish and soon to be out through Amazon. (If I were more spiritually developed I'd remember the publisher off the top of my head, too...) Stanish and her co-editor (Myers?) collected, I am told, a woman writer, artist, fan, or whatever for every season of the show: according to the ad I saw, Diana Gabaldon (whoo-hoo!) contributed her thoughts on one of my favorite Companions, the wonderful Jamie McCrimmon (still, I believe, the longest-running Companion). (Well, with one thing and another, they ALL run a LOT....)
I've recently realized that the lovely Cupcake isn't so much a tuxedo cat: with her little white gloves on her front feet, she has short white stockings on her back feet, with sketchy, trailing lines of white higher up the legs, giving the effect of a garter-belt. Thus, it isn't a tuxedo she's wearing but a French Maid outfit. No wonder Gus follows her around the house.

"Microcosm: Triceratops" and "Poissons Volants: L'Hippocampe"

"Microcosm: Triceratops"
ORIGINAL Acrylic Painting on Panel FRAMED 22"x26" $3800 SOLD
Prints & Posters are HERE
"Microcosm: Triceratops" is the second painting in my Microcosms series - delving into the theme of Alchemical microcosms - miniature life and worlds created in glass jars or beakers. This installment features a beautiful girl painted in a very classical style, holding an aerated glass orb containing a tiny primeval world, complete with triceratops! As an amateur paleontologist I simply love dinosaurs and adore painting them when possible. This is one of my favourite paintings - it also features the iris, one of my favourite flowers. Again, this painting debuted and sold at the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live 2012 show, but prints & posters are now available!
Prints & posters are now available here at Zazzle, too:

"Poissons Volants: L'Hippocampe"
ORIGINAL Acrylic Painting on Panel FRAMED 22"x26" $3800 SOLD

"Poissons Volants: L'Hippocampe" Part of my "Poissons Volants" series ("Flying Fish)" - combining my love with sea creatures and Rococo era portraiture - "L'Hippocampe" (the seahorse) was such a fun painting to do! In addition to the prismatic sehorse, there are some leafy sea dragons too! Seahorses and Seadragons are two of the most magical little animals (I could hardly believe it the first time I saw a Leafy Sea Dragon - they are amazing). And of course in the spirit of my Poissons Volants series these wee beasties are flying about on beautiful butterfly wings! Again, this painting also debuted and sold at the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live 2012 show, but prints & posters are now available!

questions in regular text; answers in bold.
1. a plane crashes on the border of the US and Canada. where do they bury the survivors?
you don't bury survivors - they're the ones who are still alive.
2. is there a 4th of July in England?
of course there is. it's just not Independence Day as it is in America. in fact, England doesn't have an Independence Day. heh.
3. how do you pronounce the capital of Kentucky - "Lou-is-ville" or "Loo-ee-ville"?
Frankfort.
***
1. A man rides into town on Friday, stays three days, and leaves on Friday. How does he do it?
Friday is the name of his horse/mule/motorcycle/car
2. A boy and his father are in a car accident. The father dies, but the boy survives, and is immediately taken to the hospital for emergency surgery. The surgeon then comes into the O.R. and says, "I can't operate on the boy, he's my son." How is this possible?
the surgeon is the boy's mother. (or, in the interest of changing times, the boy has two fathers, and this is the other one.)
3. A young woman calls her parents and cries, "My life is in ruins!" Both of her parents laugh and congratulate her. Why?
The woman is an archeologist - her career is studying ancient ruins.
this was fun! =)
